How to prepare Quantitative Aptitude for Bank Exams (IBPS / SBI PO & Clerk)

 

Preparation tips: Quantitative Aptitude for the SBI / IBPS PO and Clerk Exams






SBI & IBPS syllabus are almost same but difference in questions of difficulties level. SBI PO demands deep knowledge. You take have enough time for preparing for these exams. Prepare a study plan and adhere to the timing and topics

If you want to crack that exams then ensure that you will not take gap in preparation and have to be consistent. You have to sacrifice of your social media other deviating activities and maintain a discipline schedule until you write the exam.

Tips and suggestions are given at the end, now let’s talk regarding preparation of different topics let’s deal one by one:

Quantitative Aptitude:

1. To start with, firstly one should master topics like simplification, approximation, quadratic , missing number series, wrong number series. These topics can not be ignored as they cover around 15–20 marks. To master these topics you need to practice them every single day. Because irregularity in these topics will decrease your speed and will also impact other topics in calculations

2. Data interpretation : 

Data Interpretation and Analysis is the most challenging part of Quantitative Aptitude This section cannot be ignored a there is no SBI or IBPS exam without this topic. A set of DI Question easily earn you 5 marks. You have to learn types of data interpretation and practice questions on daily basis at least 5 DI. In pre exam you expect one question minimum and two sets in mains  exam from DI section .

3. Arithmetic Topics :

Firstly, learn all chapters with basic to advanced. Topics like Averages, LCM & HCF, Ratios, and Percentages are the basics for all the topics in aptitude. So, mastering these topics is essential as, in pre exam you can expect 10 questions and in mains 80% section form this. You can easily solve Data Interpretation section if you have good command of these topics. If you complete one chapter then revise it after 3–4 days. If you do not follow, revision cycle then your hard work in this section may go waste. So keep it in mind that, Revision is very important for arithmetic.

4. Profit and loss, simple and compound interest

The problem with going for questions of the chapter like Profit loss, Compound Interest / Simple Interest is that they require a lot of time to prepare. Basics and Concepts must be clear to master these topics and you cannot expect to complete these chapters in few days.  Try solving and understanding the questions and clues given and analyse the best method to solve, question may be lengthy but it can be solved easily in one or two steps. This only comes with lot of practice. So, never get panic if you find a big question most of them are easy to solve. Once you are clear on this topic you can easily solve the question not taking more than a minute..

5. Time and Distance/ Time and Work: 

All the suggestions mention above are applicable for this topic. Both the percentages and time related topics require clearing your basics and concepts. You can find some tricky and confusing questions in time and works questions. It is important to note that, If you can analyse what exactly the examiner is asking they the question can be easily done or else, they may waste our time.

6. Permutations and Combinations & Probability

Questions from this topic are often asked in Bank exams you need to practice extensively. Both Permutations and Combinations & Probability have their own strategies for solving. While preparing, you must first focus on Permutations and then Combinations.

Probability question can be of any kind and are often get confusing. You should practice previous years’ question papers and attempt mock tests to expertise this area.

4. Mock exams: 

You are done with practice and revision. Now the next step is to write online mock exams. All you efforts in practice sessions can be monitored and improved only when you write mock exams. Many sites provide mock exams for free or at a very reasonable price. Do not miss to write topic wise mocks to check your accuracy and speed. Important tips for IBPS / SBI Exams:

1. For any competitive exam it is very import to revise previous years question papers. It we help you analyse the changing trends as well a check you preparation levels.

2. Study Plan:






You should chalk out a study plan giving timing for all the sections of Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English as well as Mains preparation in between.  The study plan should be such that you divide equal time to each section of the exam. We will discuss about detailed study plan in the next article.

3. You should focus on the revision of critical topics. Maximum effort has to be put on topics with maximum weight age. So knowing the weight age of topics is very important. Check the weight-age of various topics in my previous article.

4. Section-wise preparation Strategy:  As there is a fixed time to attempt each section you need to built a clear section wise strategy to attempt maximum questions with each section. If you are attempting the Aptitude section then they must pre-decide in mind that what types of questions you are about solve first. For eg: you can devote the first five minutes to questions, that you are expert in and have good command, then next two minutes to simplifications, number series questions, and so on.

5. You must be very clear with the concepts. You be clear with basic concept of Quantitative Aptitude, if any you are not clear on the concepts then you will find t difficulty to solve tricky questions. In mains exams, it will be very helpful only if you are clear with concepts.

6. Competitive exams are all about time management and accuracy. You should learn shortcuts for solving questions. Since there are sectional timings, learning shortcuts will help you to attempt maximum questions in less possible time. You can practice with more and more sectional tests, take one mock test every day for each section. Since the exams are computer based, practice the mocks on you desktop or laptop computer for optimum results.

7. In SBI / IBPS exam, there is a negative marking for incorrect questions. Therefore, you are advised not to do guesswork. It is very import to remember that, answer the questions only if you are sure and you answer is correct.

8. Avoid spending too much time on one particular or any question that is taking time. While attempting the exam, do not get stuck in any question. If you are unable to understand the question, then leave that.  Note that you can solve more easy questions by skipping the one, which is killing your time. This the most common mistake that students do.

9. YouTube Videos

10. Mock  exams / tests:






Writing as many Mock tests as possible, you should take both sectional and full-length mock tests during preparation. While analyzing your performance, you should identify the weak areas and work upon improving those areas. Before the last 15 days, try to should attempt at-least two mock exams per day. Also, you must analyse your performance after every mock test.

Reasoning Section:

Reasoning section contains 35 questions of 35 marks in SBI CLERK Prelims, scoring higher marks in reasoning section is very important in any examination, this is the area which will fetch you more marks and make your success an easy sail.

Reasoning section:

Strategies.

First try to solve the section in which you have great command to solve in minimum interval of time with 100% accuracy.

Start your exam section by solving the questions based on inequalities, direction and distance, syllogism, coding-decoding, alphanumeric series, and other such other topics, which are generally less time taking and easy to solve.

Most importantly, do not waste your time to solve lengthy or tricky question at starting. Just by looking at the question, you should realize if it is time taking or confusing, and you can know it only by regular practice.

Secondly, do not hesitate to skip your weak topics or areas in reasoning section.

SBI Prelims Exam is al about time management skills rather than testing your knowledge, so be smart while attempting questions.

Thirdly, make sure to crack sectional cut off in reasoning section, if you are weak in reasoning.

During your regular practice, keep practicing the questions by setting timer on a daily basis to get used to the types of questions as well as time management, so that you can solve as many as you can in short span of time.

Remember, your overall scores depend upon your speed and accuracy, so try to solve the questions with short tricks.

Strategies for Quantitative Aptitude section:

Quantitative section is consider time taking, hard and tricky. Understanding the concept becomes quite necessary to solve various types of problems given in this section. So, always focus on one topic at a time and try to solve the different types of questions and mock tests of that particular topic.

From the above chapter wise weight age it is quite evident that Data Interpretation, Simplification, data sufficiency are main areas to focus to get good score. One should understand that skipping this area would mean that your chances of success become very less.

So understanding and know main areas and where we can score marks.

Topics like quadratic equation is also important, if the examiner gives a question set in this area, you can fetch 5 marks easily.

It is important to analysis the question and do not waste your time to solve lengthy or tricky question at starting. By looking at the question, we should come to a conclusion that the question may be time taking and will waste our precious time. English Section:

English quite neglected topic by many aspirants. If one has a good command on English, we can score good percentile in very less time thereby saving time for other sections.

To score maximum marks in English, you should have complete knowledge about syllabus and exam pattern because cracking SBI clerk exam is not a piece of cake therefore you have to be aware of each and every aspect of it. Since you will be given 20 minutes solely for English section, this section can score maximum marks because earlier, students can attempt this section in only 15 minutes.

So start practicing well before the examination, so that you can attempt maximum questions in only 20 minutes with following strategies:

Exam strategy to score maximum marks in English language in 20 minutes:-

4.      You will have to use common sense at some places like when article ‘an’ is given before a blank, it is obvious that this would be followed by a vowel. These grammatical clues can help you a lot.

5.      If we talk about parajumble sentences part, one can score well in this topic because we don’t need grammar knowledge in this section however if you find it difficult to solve yet you can answer 2-3 questions e.g. 1st sentence, 2nd sentence and last sentence.
